1. Ki-Dori
Dividing the sawlog of Wild Sugi into equal slices from the centre with a sturdy blade, the staves are called “Kure”.
Let “Kure” air dry and then artificially dry it.
2.Sen-Kake
Adjusting the thickness and curvature of the staves with a “sen” (spokeshave)
3. Shoujiki-thrust
Shaving the both sides of staves with a big plane called “Shoujiki”. The plane has a curve which makes the staves perfectly fit in the shape of a tub.
4.Kure-Tate
Trial fit of staves using a temporary jig.
Lining up staves by the colour and wood grain so that the product looks beautiful when finished.
5.Plane finish
Scraping both the inside and outside of Oke for smooth surface.
6.Fitting the bamboo hoops and inserting the bottom
Fitting the bamboo hoops, inserting the bottom and tightening with the mullet.
7.Complete
Oke and Taru product is finished which has rich aroma of Sugi.
